What this job is really like :

This role will involve leading the delivery of the RSAII Home Portfolio strategy. Reporting to the Director of Personal Lines Underwriting and Retail Pricing you will lead a team of Underwriting SME’s to support the business in the development and delivery of the business plan.

The role will see you execute the Portfolio strategy through the implementation of plan actions, monitoring account development, reviewing UW quality and mix trends, developing propositions and products and providing Underwriting insight, and technical guidance to the business.

You will ensure compliance with Group Underwriting policy and technical standards and provide the business with guidance and support.

You and your team will work closely with the Retail Pricing Team to analyse the portfolio and implement actions to ensure the RSAII Home Portfolio targets sustainable longterm performance.

Jobholders are typically responsible for :

  • Reporting to the Director of Personal Lines, you will play a lead role in the development of the Home Strategy and business plan
  • Actively managing portfolio trends monitoring and analysing portfolio trends, business mix, risk profiles and claims trends turning insight into action, exploiting development opportunities and addressing performance concerns ensuring RSAII targets the right risks
  • Work closely with Sales, Marketing and other business units to develop propositions and product development features and enhancement opportunities from an Underwriting and Customer perspective and lead from concept to CBA to execution
  • Ensuring the long term development of the home portfolio thorough the development of product development initiatives, based on portfolio performance, market intelligence, R&D incite, legal developments and emerging risks.
  • Work closely with the Marketing Team to identify segment opportunities and to assist in building customer volume plan
  • Underwriting operational excellence will be at the centre of your thinking. You will assist the business in the execution of Operational and Process excellence in the execution of Underwriting processes
  • Providing technical guidance and underwriting decisions, coaching and assisting in the developing of technical capability across the business
  • Work closely with the Actuarial team to understand and develop appropriate pricing actions to drive maximum benefit and impact in the performance of the portfolio and delivery of plan
  • Utilise external data opportunities and the RSAII Geocoding capability to influence and develop the Underwriting and Home portfolio management opportunity this segmentation presents
  • Building and maintaining effective working relationships with other business areas and functions in order to maximise the effective operation of the team / department
  • Representing RSA externally in industry forums such as Insurance Ireland, external partners, brokers and reinsures always promoting RSA’s best interests
  • Ensuring RSAII Home Product suite and Underwriting systems and processes meet Group Underwriting Policy and Technical standards.
  • Oversight and execution of the Underwriting licence framework

  • Responsibility for the development and update of technical manuals and procedures and standards to comply with group, legal and regulatory frameworks
  • Building and maintaining effective working relationships with other business areas and functions in order to maximise the effective operation of the team

  • Size & Scope :

  • This role will report to the Director of Personal Lines Underwriting and Retail Pricing
  • The role will manage the RSAII Home, Travel and PA Product suite
  • Jobholder Requirements

  • Relevant 3rd level qualification
  • CIP, ACII or equivalent insurance qualification
  • Knowledge of Personal Lines Underwriting and Product Management
  • Good financial acumen and analysis capability
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Regulatory Requirements :

  • This role is subject to the Fitness and Probity Standards ( The Standards ) , issued under Section 50 of the Central Bank Reform Act 2010 and any subsequent amendments.
  • The role holder must ensure they are fully aware of the Standards and in a position to fully comply with them at all times.

    This role falls within scope of the Minimum Competency Code (MCC) and includes a responsibility to directly manage or supervise other in-

    scope roles. This role requires the jobholder to have attained the status of Qualified Person’ in the relevant function(s) i.

    e. i.e. personal lines, commercial lines and claims, or have a Statement of Grandfathered Status in the relevant function(s).

    The status of Qualified Person’ can be achieved through attaining the qualification of Certified Insurance Practitioner (CIP), Accredited Product Advisor (APA or Associate or Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII or FCII).

    The jobholder must also comply with all CPD requirements as outlined in the MCC.

    Track Record

  • Experience of working in underwriting, claims roles or other equlvalent relevant experience
  • Experience of working directly with customers and in the customer environment.
  • Depth & breadth of experience across a range of lines of business, products and types of customer.
  • Understanding of business strategies and customer propositions
