We’re looking for a seasoned Insurance Professional to lead and manage the Commercial operational underwriting function.

Proven leadership skills in driving change, excellent relationship management, analytical pragmatic decision maker.

Reporting to Commercial Director, Darrell Sansom the role has as an All-Ireland remit with flexibility in job location and working arrangements.

Key responsibility to lead and manage the commercial operational underwriting function, applying underwriting and pricing strategy and policies to build technical excellence and deliver profit and income targets.

  • Deliver planned underwriting result through underwriting account management (revenue & product), financial planning, account monitoring and analysis of underwriting trends
  • Responsible for profitability, underwriting governance and control of all Commercial business traded through Brokers, Partnerships and Direct including business managed in Branch
  • Demonstrate loss ratio control by effectively implementing and monitoring underwriting controls.
  • Implement & influence underwriting philosophy & strategy through relationship with central Underwriting function to achieve financial objectives.
  • Build a reputation as an underwriting expert and build confidence in underwriting capability

  • Monitor underwriting standards ensuring effective management and deployment of empowerment
  • Lead the business technical decision making for new and current deals to ensure delivery of combined operating ratio requirements
  • Lead underwriting relationships with key customers to deliver profitable growth. Build relationships with management teams across the broker & branch network.
  • Action cases in line with knowledge of wider broker action plans.

  • Lead and manage a number of senior underwriters through effective performance management to continuously develop the technical capabilities of the wider team
  • Embrace and deliver the change programme, and adopt changes, particularly system and process led
  • Qualifications

  • APA PD01-04 (essential), CIP, MDI, ACII and / or Business Degree (Desirable)
  • Proven experience and ability to lead & motivate teams
  • Previous experience of working at a senior level within a commercial insurance environment; sound understanding of insurance market and processes essential.
  • Strong level of technical underwriting expertise in a commercial insurance environment
  • Excellent relationship management skills and experience of building successful long term relationships both internal and external
  • People and resource management skills, with proven experience and ability in leading and motivating teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Pragmatic decision maker with good analytical and numerical reasoning skills
  • Strong long & short term planning & analytical skills with proven experience of both operational & strategic planning in previous roles
  • Proven experience in decision making on a wide range of technical underwriting scenarios, including large case and portfolio management, within a Commercial environment
  • Understanding profitability of business within the intermediary channel.
