Our client, a commercial semi-state utilities company is seeking to recruit a solicitor to its' projects division which manages the delivery of key strategic water, wastewater and gas infrastructure.

The Major Projects solicitor will ensure that Major Projects has the required legal expertise and support required by the business to deliver this infrastructure, and in particular to obtain all necessary planning and environmental consents.

Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer the Major Projects solicitor will work closely with Major Projects as well as the legal teams in each of the company's entities in order to ensure that Major Projects delivers its capital portfolio.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the Chief Legal Officer and the relevant business unit in providing in-house legal advice to the Major Projects team for regulatory, planning and environmental matters
  • Draft, review and update regulatory submissions and planning applications
  • Manage and support third party specialists and teams, including external lawyers, to deliver required business outcomes on behalf of the Major Projects team
  • Attend project meetings, and liaise with external advisers, the business, the Chief Legal Officer and the relevant business unit Head of Legal
  • Advise the business on planning and environmental matters
  • Promote legal awareness and communicate to the business when legal input should be sought
  • Identify and develop opportunities and strategies to mitigate potential legal risks
  • Collaborate with peers in managing a programme to develop legal awareness
  • Manage and update the Major Projects team of relevant legislative changes and case-law affecting the conduct of the company’s business
  • Regular interface with the Major Projects Programme Managers to ensure that Major Projects’ legal needs are being met
  • Inputting into and maintaining registers as required
  • Monitoring planning and environmental legislative changes
  • Ensure that personal development and professional knowledge are maintained
  • Other duties as required from time to time
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Qualified Solicitor with a minimum of 4 years post qualification experience
  • Good knowledge of relevant planning and environmental law, to include knowledge of AA and EIA requirements
  • Experienced in the provision of concise advices, including on environmental issues
  • Excellent legal drafting, analytical and negotiating skills
  • Proven track record of working collaboratively and establishing good working relationships across multiple functions and business areas
  • IT literate with a good knowledge of Microsoft office, and good keyboard skills
  • Ability to deal with complexity, advising on risks and practical mitigation measures
